Safe, private clinic
Our beautiful award-winning clinic is in the centre of Winchester and we look forward to welcoming you. Keeping you and others safe is our priority and so if you are unwell, please let us know in advance and we will make appropriate arrangements.
Your appointment will be with a trained clinician in our clinic in Winchester. We use video and camera otoscopes to record the inside of your ear and ensure we can see clearly. If required we can seek input from ENT specialists by sending them images.
We operate within a registered private pharmacy which means that, depending on the outcome of the consultation, we can discuss and provide any required treatments, tests or referrals as appropriate. You can also be assured that we work within a strict governance framework.
For an ear examination, we use a special tool called an otoscope to look into the ear canal and see the eardrum. This has a video camera attached which enables us to take still and moving pictures, These are retained for reference and can be sent to ear specialists for their opinion if required.
After taking a history we will gently pull the ear back and slightly up, so as to straighten the ear canal. For a baby under 12 months, the ear will be pulled downward and out to straighten the ear canal.

Why do otoscopy?
We will perform an ear examination, or otoscopy, if you have:
- an earache
- an ear infection
- hearing loss
- ringing in your ears
- any other ear-related symptoms
We can examine your ear to diagnose an ear infection or to see if treatments for an ear condition are working.
We can also see if the ear is full of wax and then remove if required.
Ear infections are common, especially in children.
An ear exam may be slightly uncomfortable or painful if you have an ear infection. We will stop the exam and remove the otoscope if the pain worsens.
What are the risks of otoscopy?
There are very few risks associated with an ear exam.
We use single use equipment and change the tip of the otoscope or clean it properly after examining each ear, to ensure any infection is not spread from one ear to the other.
What might we see?
Normally, your ear canal is skin-coloured and your eardrum is light grey or pearly white. The light should reflect off of a healthy eardrum. You may also have some yellow or brown earwax, which isn’t harmful. If your ear canal and eardrum appear healthy, you mostly likely don’t have an ear infection.
If we identify any of the following in your ear canal or behind your eardrum, you most likely have an ear infection:
- amber liquid
If the light doesn’t reflect off of your eardrum, it’s another indication that fluid may have collected behind the eardrum due to an infection.
