COVID-19 antigen rapid test: How it works
A simple nasal swab test is all that is required to diagnose active COVID-19 infections, facilitating appropriate containment and reducing further spread of disease. A negative result may be a requirement for travel or work.
We provide health professional swab testing to ensure that the sample obtained is more likely to return an accurate result. The test we use is CE approved for health professional use only.
Our test meets the antigen requirements for all countries where this type of test is acceptable. Our test is approved by WHO. The tests cost less than a PCR test and conserves laboratory capacity.

The COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Test – a chromatographic lateral flow immunoassay – checks for protein fragments from the virus and thus for its direct, physical presence in the body. It is performed using a swab from the nasopharynx. This is extracted in a buffer solution and then pipetted onto the test cassette. A qualitative result is ready in 15 minutes.
COVID-19 RT-PCR Test also available

These tests can be used for ‘fit to fly ‘ certificates.
As part of your company’s strategy to help keep your employees and workplaces COVID secure and operational, the COVID-19 instant Antigen test is an affordable, fast and accurate way to determine the infection status of employees onsite or returning to the workplace. If you require an occupational health testing strategy then please contact us to discuss.
Alternatively you may want to get your child back to school, student back home or need to return to work.
Fast testing will be a vital part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly during the Winter when it will be difficult to differentiate between common colds, flu and COVID-19.
What’s the difference between the COVID-19 Antigen Test and the COVID-19 PCR test?
The COVID-19 RT-PCR test detects the virus’ genetic material (RNA) within a positive sample. A laboratory process is required to test the sample and can take up to 72 hrs to return a result from the time of sample collection (NHS). Our PCR tests usually return a result within 24 hours (the morning following the day of testing).
The COVID-19 Rapid Antigen test detects specific proteins situated on the cell membranes of the COVID-19 virus. These proteins are known as antigens and can be quickly detected, within 15 minutes, using the immunoassay device.
Both tests require a swab sample to be taken from either the nose or throat areas (or both). We use highly trained healthcare professionals for accurate sampling and comfort.
Both the instant COVID-19 Antigen Test and the COVID-19 PCR test are effective methods for detecting the presence of the COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) virus but the rapid antigen test delivers quicker results.
The RT-PCR test is considered the ‘gold standard’. Please talk to us and we can provide the information you need to decide which test is right for you.
How does this test perform?
- The diagnostic sensitivity of our tests all meet the MHRA Target Product Profile requirements. The Acon Flowflex Test has a senstivity of 97%
- The diagnostic specificity is 99.5%.
There is always a residual risk of a false-negative result, when in doubt, a PCR test should be carried out to confirm negative results.
Test properties
Our rapid tests use lateral flow chromatographic immunoassay for the qualitative detection of SARS-CoV-2 viral nucleoprotein antigens in human naso and oropharyngeal samples. The test is intended to be used as an aid in the diagnosis of infections with SARS-CoV-2.
