FAQs – testing for international arrivals into England

Arriving back in the country and understanding what is required can be confusing and so we hope to help you so that you book the right testing package and at the right time to be compliant with the UK Government requirements.

Q: Why do I have to have these tests?
A: It is important that the spread of coronavirus and especially that of different variants is contained as much as possible. The UK Government has put this testing process in place for all arrivals to reduce the risk of variants coming into the country.

Q: Does this requirement for quarantine and testing apply to people travelling to Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales?
A: There are different requirements in each of the devolved nations and so you should following the advice for the specific country

Q: The different tests are confusing! What tests must I get and which ones are optional?
A: For arrivals before 04:00 on 04 October, everyone travelling into England from outside the Common Travel Area must take a coronavirus test and get a negative result during the 3 days before travel. This can be a PCR or antigen test. In addition, everyone must also book and pay for a travel test package, depending on where they have come from, their vaccination status and their age.

Q: What are the new rules for people arriving from a non-red list country if vaccinated ?
A: If you qualify as fully vaccinated you will have to:

    • book and pay for a day 2 COVID-19 test – to be taken after arrival in England
    • complete your passenger locator form – any time in the 48 hours before you arrive in England
    • take a COVID-19 test on or before day 2 after you arrive in England

Under the new rules, you will not need to:

    • take a pre-departure test
    • take a day 8 COVID-19 test
    • quarantine at home or in the place you are staying for 10 days after you arrive in England

Q: Who qualifies as fully vaccinated?
A:  From 4am Monday 4 October, you will qualify as fully vaccinated if you are vaccinated either:

    • under an approved vaccination programme in the UK, Europe, USA or UK vaccine programme overseas
    • with a full course of the Oxford/AstraZeneca, Pfizer BioNTech, Moderna or Janssen vaccines from a relevant public health body in Australia, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Bahrain, Brunei, Canada, Dominica, Israel, Japan, Kuwait, Malaysia, New Zealand, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan or the United Arab Emirates (UAE)

Formulations of the 4 listed vaccines, such as AstraZeneca Covishield, AstraZeneca Vaxzevria and Moderna Takeda, qualify as approved vaccines.

You must have had a complete course of an approved vaccine at least 14 days before you arrive in England.

Where 2 doses of a vaccine are required for a full course, you will be able to:

    • mix 2 different types of vaccine, for example Oxford/AstraZeneca and Moderna
    • have the 2 vaccinations under 2 different approved programmes, for example Australia and Japan, UK and USA, EU and Canada

Until 4 October, mixed vaccines are only permitted if you are vaccinated under the UK, Europe, USA or UK overseas vaccination programme.

The rules for fully vaccinated people will also apply if you are either:

    • under 18 and resident in the UK or one of the listed countries or territories with approved vaccination programmes
    • taking part in an approved COVID-19 vaccine trial in the UK or USA – in due course, we expect to extend this to other countries

Q: What do I need to show I am full vaccinated?
A:  To show that you qualify as fully vaccinated (plus 14 days), you will have to show a document (digital or paper-based) from a national or state-level public health body that includes, as a minimum:

    • forename and surname(s)
    • date of birth
    • vaccine brand and manufacturer
    • date of vaccination for every dose
    • country or territory of vaccination and/or certificate issuer

If your document from a public health body does not include all of these, you must follow the non-vaccinated rules. If not, you may be denied boarding.

Q: What is I was fully vaccinated in the USA?
A:  You will need to show a CDC card showing you’ve had a full course of an FDA-approved vaccine in the USA. You’ll also need to prove that you are a resident of the USA.

Q: What if I was fully vaccinated in Europe?
A:  You will need to show an EU Digital COVID Certificate (EU DCC), showing you’ve had a full course of an EMA or Swissmedic-approved vaccine.

If you are fully vaccinated, but do not qualify under these fully vaccinated rules, you must follow the non-vaccinated rules.

Q: What must I do if I am not fully vaccinated or my vaccine programme does not meet the vaccinated rules?
A:  If you do not qualify under the fully vaccinated rules, are partially vaccinated or are not vaccinated then before you travel to England you must:

    • take a pre-departure COVID-19 test – to be taken in the 3 days before you travel to England
    • book and pay for day 2 and day 8 COVID-19 tests – to be taken after arrival in England
    • complete your passenger locator form – any time in the 48 hours before you arrive in England

After you arrive in England you must:

    • quarantine at home or in the place you are staying for 10 days
    • take a COVID-19 test on or before day 2 and on or after day 8

You may be able to end quarantine early if you pay for a private COVID-19 test through the Test to Release scheme.

Q: What if I am travelling from a red list country or have been in a red-list country in the previous ten days before arrival into England?
    A:
From 4am Monday 4 October, you must follow these rules if you are fully vaccinated, partially vaccinated or not vaccinated.

You will only be allowed to enter the UK if you are a British or Irish national or you have residence rights in the UK.

Before you travel to England, you must:

When you arrive in England, you must quarantine in a managed hotel, including 2 COVID-19 tests.

Before you travel to England you must:

Q: Do children need to be tested?
A: Children under 5 who are UK residents do not need to take the day 2 test but all children of 5 and over must.

Q: What about children who are not UK residents?
A: On arrival in England, children aged 5 to 17 who are not ordinarily resident in the UK:

    • must take a COVID-19 test on or before day 2 and on or after day 8
    • must quarantine at home or in the place they’re staying for 10 full days

Q: What will happen if I don’t have the tests on day 2 and/or day 8?
A: Providing false or deliberately misleading information when filling out your passenger locator form is an offence punishable by imprisonment. You could be fined up to £10,000, imprisoned for up to 10 years or both if you do not provide accurate details about the countries you have visited in the 10 days before you arrived in the UK. If you break the quarantine rules, you may face a penalty of up to £10,000. If you do not take the tests, you may face a penalty of up to £2,000.

      Q: When is day 2?
A: The day you arrive in England is counted as day zero (0). If you arrive, for example, on Tuesday then your first day of quarantine is Wednesday  and second day is Thursday. You can have your day 2 test on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday in this example. This first test is designed to help identify any potentially harmful variants of COVID-19 at the earliest opportunity.

Q: What happens if I test positive?
      A:
If you test positive for any test you must quarantine for a further 10 days from the day after you took the test – you will receive further advice alongside your test results. If your test shows that you have a variant of coronavirus known as a ‘variant of concern’, you will get a further call and your contacts will be asked to be tested.

Q: Where can I find out more about testing as an international arrival?
      A: Visit https://www.gov.uk/guidance/how-to-quarantine-when-you-arrive-in-england

      Ending quarantine early

      Test to release

You can still use the Test to Release for international travel scheme. The scheme lets you choose to pay for a private COVID-19 test. If the result is negative, you can stop quarantining.

You cannot take a test until you have been in England for 5 full days.

The scheme is voluntary and applies to those quarantining in England only.

If you do not want to opt into the Test to Release scheme, you will need to self-isolate for 10 days.

You cannot use the Test to Release scheme if you have been in or through any country that is on the travel ban red list in the 10 days before you arrive in England.

If you’re planning to use the Test to Release scheme, you must still take a test on or before day 2 and on or after day 8, unless you’re exempt. Even if you get a negative result from your Test to Release and are released from self-isolation, you still need to take a test on or after day 8 to check that you do not have COVID-19.

      IMPORTANT:

      1. We will not be able to take responsibility for calculating the time when you need to have your tests. However, we will do all we can to help.

      2. Please do not visit the clinic if you have current COVID19 symptoms. We can drop the kit off at you for self-use if required or perform the test at your home. Please contact us for more details.

      3. There are no refunds for the day 2 and 8 package unless proof of not travelling is provided. In this instance the fee will be refunded less an adminstration fee of £20.00. If a package has been purhased and a client does not complete day 8, then there will be no refund.

      4. From 06 April 2021, we are able to sell day 2 and 8 separately. This is relevant for people who are not requiring day 8 tests as they are only in the UK for a short period of time. Please contact the clinic for more information.
