Diabetes Check in Winchester
Diabetes is a lifelong condition that causes a person’s blood sugar level to become too high. If it is untreated it can lead to very serious health problems including heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease, pain, blindness and amputations. We can provide you with an accurate diabetes check in Winchester.
There are 2 main types of diabetes:
- Type 1 diabetes – where the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin
- Type 2 diabetes – where the body does not produce enough insulin, or the body’s cells do not react to insulin
Type 2 diabetes is far more common than type 1. In the UK, around 90% of all adults with diabetes have type 2.
Our diabetes check assesses your risk of developing diabetes and includes a rapid blood glucose test using blood from a fingerprick.

Diabetes check: how it works
Your health professional will take your blood pressure, ethnicity, age and BMI test results into account to assess whether you’re at an increased risk of developing diabetes. We will also test your blood glucose level.
A fasting blood glucose test (FGT) works by measuring the level of glucose in your blood after a period of not eating.
Anyone who is at a high risk of pre-diabetes should be given the FPG test. This includes those who are severely overweight or obese, people of South Asian or African-Caribbean descent, or anyone with a family history of diabetes.
The fasting plasma glucose test is performed after a person fasts for at least 8 hours.
However, diagnosis of diabetes or of non-diabetic hyperglycaemia requires a venous blood sample to be tested in the laboratory. We will advise you if you need to see your GP for further tests.

Support from a healthcare professional
Individuals who have a fasting blood glucose level greater than or equal to 7.0 mmol/L (126 mg/dl) will be referred to their GP and, if the results are consistent, diagnosed with diabetes.
If the results are less than 7.0 mmol/L (126 mg/dl) but greater than 6.1 mmol/L (110 mg/dl) the individual may have impaired fasting glucose, or pre-diabetes.
Alongside a full explanation of the results and what they mean, we will support you in identifying the lifestyle changes you can make to reduce your rusk of developing diabetes.
